Week of May 1, 2005
Pray With Jesus by Elizabeth Elliott
Because I am "of the earth, earthy," I find that my prayers for the people I love are mostly bound by very earthy concerns -- Lord, help P. to find a good wife, show G. which college to attend, provide money for W.'s house and E.'s car, help T. with his book, give X. a better job. It is meet and proper to pray for such things, but not to pray only for such things. There are prayers of far more lasting import which we must also learn to pray. We can find words for those in the prayer of Jesus for the people He loved:
- that they may be one;
- that they may find his joy completed in themselves;
- that they may be kept from evil;
- that they may be made holy by the truth;
- that they may live in Christ;
- that they may grow complete into one;
- that they may be with him;
- that the love which God has for Christ may be in their hearts.
If we learn to pray that kind of prayer, it will perhaps amend the "lesser" prayers. Lord, teach me to pray. Open my eyes to see beyond the earthly to the heavenly. Let my primary concerns be heavenly ones, that your kingdom may come on Earth, your will be done in me and in those I love. Teach me to pray with Jesus, for his sake. Amen.
VBS Sign-Up
Registration for Vacation Bible School will be on Sunday, May 15, in Fellowship Hall at church. VBS will be held June 13-17 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. for children age 4 through 5th grade. VBS is open to all children, not just those whose families attend Friedens, so invite your neighbors and friends to enroll. This year's theme is "Jerusalem Marketplace." For more information or to volunteer to help, call Pam Landon at 284-5916.
Mom-And-Me Teas
Moms and daughters can enjoy a fun time at two upcoming teas. "Mom and Me Princess Tea" for mothers and their daughters younger than 9 will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come dressed in your favorite princess outfit and bring your favorite book. For girls 9 and older, a "Mother and Daughter Tea" will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on May 10. Call 284-2471 or stop by the church to sign up. Grandmas and granddaughters are welcome too.
Men's Breakfast
The Friedens Men's Ministry breakfast for May will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday at church. Come enjoy food and fellowship with other guys at Friedens. Call 284-2471 to sign up.

Helps And Hollers
- Volunteers are needed to help with Vacation Bible School. Sign up in Fellowship Hall or call Pam Landon, 284-5916.
- Volunteers are needed for Early Childhood Ministry to man the nursery during worship and during Sunday morning growth groups. Call Kathy Kato at 268-6999.
- Food Pantry needs this week include cereal, diet soup, cooking oil, shortening, canned corn, canned dinners, detergent and cash. Bring you food pantry donations to church and place them in the shopping cart in the west foyer. If you or someone you know needs help, contact the church at 284-2471.
Pray All About It
- Pray for Friedens family members enduring cancer and other health issues, including Dawn Uselding, Peg Bannon, Warren Grady, Jeff Starr and Brandon Novack.
- Pray for Friedens family members who are out of work or underemployed, including Bridget Huston, Paul Kopp, John Newton, Charles Nitzke, Dan Dufner and Paul Olivent. Do you know anyone in similar straits? Send the church an e-mail or call.
- Pray for the new Strategic Planning Committee as its members pray and seek the Lord's guidance in plotting out the church's future.
- Pray for Pastors Mark Voll, Don Zahurance and Mark Kato and their wives and families. Pray they would be encouraged and strengthened.
- Pray for the lay leaders and many volunteers that help lead various church ministries.
- Pray for the teenagers and other youth in the church and the adults that lead Friedens youth ministries.
- Pray for a deeper commitment to God's Word and greater passion to serve others among the Friedens family.
