FriedensNotes
Week of September 5, 2004
"Lord, I can't but then You never said I could. Lord, You can but then You always said You would," one poem reads. Are you facing some things this week that are bigger than you, out of your reach, over your head? Take your problems in prayer to him who promised, "I'll never let you down, never walk off and leave you." (Heb. 13:5). Trade your cares for his: "Cast all your cares on him, because he cares for you." (I Peter 5:7).
Got AWANA?
AWANA starts this week, 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at church. It's a great time for kids age 4 through 5th grade. They'll learn about God's Word, his love for them and they'll have a great time doing so as they play games, sing songs and earn merit badges. It's free. Bring your children and invite your neighbors too. This week will feature special guest Christopher Churchmouse and author Barbara Davoll. They will be on hand during worship Sunday too.
Why Christians Should Study The Old Testament
For many people, the Old Testament seems confusing and even contradictory. While the Old Testament can be a challenge to understand in the proper context, it's nevertheless an vital part of the Bible. If you're not convinced, this short essay lays out a good argument for studying the Old Testament as carefully as we do the New. Read more at http://www.gotquestions.org/old-testament.html. Then consider participating in the new Growth Group, "Old Testament Survey" at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays between worship services. It's one of several, including a study for women on I Timothy and an examination of Islam and international terrorism.
Not Just Another Nice Guy
"Jesus is no pale-faced altar boy with his hair parted in the middle speaking softly and avoiding confrontation. He works with wood and commands the loyalty of dockworkers. No question about it, there is something fierce in the heart of God," writes John Eldridge. Is it your ambition as a Christian man to be "a nice guy." God wants more for you. Go here
Reaching Into The Red Light
Not all missionaries are in the jungles or tiny villages of Third World countries. The Gospel is desperately needed in Europe's urban centers too. Read the tale of one woman missionary and her church and how she is reaching out to the women of Amsterdam's notorious red light district. http://www.gcmweb.org/missions/feature.asp?id=969
The Purpose-Driven Marriage
In the article, "The Purpose-driven Marriage," Rick Warren defines "five biblical purposes to give direction to your marriage." Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church and author of the best-selling "The Purpose Driven Life," concludes, "God's plan for you and your spouse-for your marriage - is wider and deeper than anything in your wildest, craziest dreams."
