Under Attack From God
"He breaks through me with breach after breach. He runs at me like a warrior." (Job 16:14)
Each of us live within a stronghold, our own private fortress. Perhaps we're proud of the way we look, our career or our reputation. We may even defend our habits, no matter how destructive. "That's just the way I am," we might say. Perhaps we feel safe in the arms of the American dream, secured in our house, cars, 401(k) and white picket fences. God wants to tear down the strongholds in which we trust, those sweet lies with which Satan has sedated us. We are under attack from God. And he won't stop until we surrender to his love, join him in his quest and run with him.
"Let us lay aside every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles us and let us run." (Hebrews 12:1)
9-11 Remembrance
The Ozaukee Chorus will perform a concert of sacred and patriotic music at 7:30 p.m. at Friedens. Their performance will be preceded by an appearance of Christopher Churchmouse at 5 p.m. A great time for families. Call the church office for more information.
Fall Schedule Starts
Friedens goes to its fall worship schedule beginning Sept. 4. Worship services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday and at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sundays. Christian education classes for children and adults will be held between Sunday services at 9:15 a.m. Child care is available both Saturday and Sunday.
Small Groups Are Big
Get involved with one of the many discussion groups forming for the fall, whether they meet on Sunday morning at church or during the week. Upcoming classes include "How to Share Your Faith," "Old Testament Survey," "The Book of Romans," "The Purpose-Driven Life," "Building a Marriage," and others. There are groups for singles, couples, men and women, as well as an array of groups for teenagers and our Wednesday night Awana group for children. Call Pastor Don at church for more information. Classes start next Sunday. Don't delay.
Going Public
Traditional methods of evangelism often aggressive and non-relational often don't translate well in the workplace or within family settings. "Some of the old gospel-sharing methods are unwise, if not flat-out unethical," say the authors of the how-to book, "Going Public with Your Faith" (Zondervan; $14.99). What's an evangelical to do? The Ancient Roman Internet
Calvin Conkey of Create International points out that the Internet and the ancient Roman road system, parts of which still exist today, were both designed originally with a military purpose and both quickly expanded to trade and other communication. It was the presence of Roman roads that facilitated the rapid spread of the Gospel. Likewise the Internet has the same potential as a network to carry the Gospel. Learn more
"The Purpose-Driven Marriage"
In the article, "The Purpose-driven Marriage," Rick Warren defines "five biblical purposes to give direction to your marriage." Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church and author of the best-selling "The Purpose Driven Life," concludes, "God's plan for you and your spouse for your marriage is wider and deeper than anything in your wildest dreams." Gift Upon Gift
"The more we know and are known by God, the more our thanksgiving comes spontaneously. But God is also patient with our lack of thanks. He knows our many needs and he loves to meet them, despite our ingratitude. Now that's something to be thankful for." More
