FriedensNotes
Week of July 25, 2004
"Praise be to the LORD my Rock who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle." Psalm 144:1. God is a drill instructor, putting us through an obstacle course, preparing us for battles still in the future. Training implies learning something new, using muscles you've never used before, awakening brain cells that have never before been employed. That means change. That means discomfort, pain, stress, stretching, spiritually lifting new and heavier weights. Why should we be surprised that there is discomfort when God asks us to change or to do something new? By faith, we should understand, there will be joy, success and blessing in the end, if we stick with the training program. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4

Faith of the Founders?
Were America's "Founding Fathers" Christian? It's a legitimate and interesting question, but unfortunately one that usually only comes up in the course of heated political debates. Read James Watkins' even-handed article on what each of the Founding Fathers believed at http://www.gospelcom.net/watkins/foundingfathers.htm.
