FriedensNotes
Week of February 1, 2004
One Life at aTime
In Book of Acts, chapter 3, the apostles Peter and John met a man who had been crippled his entire life. The two friends took the initiative, made themselves available, and God worked through them to change that man's life. As a result, thousands of others came to trust in Christ as their savior. Many programs exist in churches to help people and reach the multitudes, but what God's word teaches us over and over is that He rewards the honest efforts of individuals -- friends working with friends, like Peter and John changing the world one life at a time. God wants to use you. Ask God to show you how you can be used to help someone this week. And ask a friend to help you help that person.
A Church Growth Plan
Put away the razors guys. Beginning this week, men are letting their hair down, at least from their chins, as the 150th Anniversary beard-growing contest commences. The competition ends on March 28 when beards will be judged at the Spring Fellowship Dinner. There will be prizes, by the way. No wagering please.
Valentine's Day
Enjoy an "Evening of Elegance" with your spouse and other couples from Friedens on Saturday, Feb. 14. There will be a dinner catered by Nisleit's Country Inn restaurant and entertainment provided by harpist Greg Buchanan. The cost is $25 per couple. For more information, call the church office at 284-2471.
Get Ready for 40 Days of Purpose
The "40 Days of Purpose" begins on April 25 so clear your calendar to attend small group meetings, some of which will meet in homes. Hosts for those groups are needed. Also be thinking about friends you can invite. If you're interested in learning more about the "40 Days of Purpose" by Rick Warren and the church he pastors Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. -- check out the church website at http://www.saddleback.com/flash/default.htm. Winter Jammin'
A group from Friedens will be going to Milwaukee on Saturday, Feb. 7, to Winter Jam, a Christian rock concert featuring Relient K, Audio Adrenaline, Newsong and others. The group will be leaving from the church parking lot at about 5:30 p.m. Bring a friend or two - this is great opportunity to introduce your friends to Christ. There's a sign-up sheet at church or give Doug Ferrell a call at 375-1009.
Go to "The Bridge"
Using popular culture movies, TV, politics, whatever is a great way to begin discussions on spiritual things with friends, neighbors, co-workers and family. The approach, known as "The Bridge Strategy" because it helps bridge the gap between Christian and secular mindsets, is not new. In fact it was employed by the Apostle Paul in Acts 17. Here's an article from Dave Couchman of Facing the Challenge on Paul's approach http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/biblical.php.
Learning from Ross
Do today's postmodern youth have anything to teach us about evangelism? In "Learning from Ross," writer, editor, and educator David Sanford admits he almost missed the answer on the way home from work one day. Key lesson: Listen. God's already at work in their lives. It's important to hear their story first. Go to: http://www.onmission.org/Webzine/nov_dec03/learning_from_ross.htm.
