"Man never achieves a clear knowledge of himself unless he has first looked upon God's face, and then descends from contemplating Him to scrutinize himself." — John Calvin

Put Your Stamp On

A "Mom and Me" stamping class will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the church. There will be a light luncheon (due to the fact that it's after church and that it's at lunch time!) This is a great time for moms and kids to enjoy making some fun holiday things. It's sponsored by the Women's Ministry. You can sign up at the information table. Any questions, call Monica Rowley at 284-9106 or e-mail her at msrowley@wi.rr.com

Membership Seminar Nov. 8

You may have heard there is an upcoming seminar for people interested in becoming "official" members of the Friedens Family. Well, the rumors are true! It's Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those who attend will be able to get all their questions about Friedens answered. Please RSVP by calling 284-2471 so materials can be ready for you. If you already are a Friedens member in good standing, you also are welcome. It's free and nursery will be available. If you can't make it but wish you could, talk to Pastor Mark and set up an appointment to meet with him individually.

Contemporary Worship Committee

The Contemporary Worship Committee will meet again at 5:30, Sunday, Nov. 9, in the church youth room. If you have ideas on the subject, are musically inclined or have a heart for teenagers and 20-somethings, please attend. For more information, talk to Pastor Mark Voll or Pastor Mark Kato by calling 284-2471.

We're Not Kidding About Kids

Friedens offers a variety of youth programs. If you haven't signed your children up for them yet, there's no holding you back. Just call the church office or grab any Friedens member and ask how you can sign them up. Do so soon so they can get in on all holiday programs and other fun stuff coming up in the next several weeks. Available programs include:

And don't forget to check the church bulletin, the weekly FriedensNote and the monthly FriedensBote for information on other youth activities.

A Whirlwind Tour of the Bible

Are you intimidated by the Bible? Don't know your Jeremiah from your Jehosophat? Whirlwind Bible Tours (WBT) understands – http://www.pronetisp.net/~diana/wbt.htm – and offers Internet visitors a fast-paced, humorous tour of the major people and events of the Bible. Chapter titles include, "Earth: The Early Years"; "My World's Fallen and I Can't Get Up"; "Moses: the Great Escape"; "War and Peace (Repeat)"; "Decline and Fall of the Israeli Empire" and "Jesus People: The Early Years."

Touching Women's Hearts to Build Godly Homes

Proverbs 31 Ministry is a non-denominational, non-profit organization dedicated to glorifying God, using Proverbs 31:10-31 as a guide. It seeks to uplift and encourage women by shedding light on God's design for women and on their God-given responsibilities. You can listen to its radio program online; find a daily devotional, life stories, inspiring articles and more at http://www.proverbs31.org/.

Spirituality and Sports

InterVarsity Press looks at the way that Christians have approached sports through history, and includes some guidelines for how we should understand physical competition today. The article is an excerpt from the "The Complete Book of Everyday Christianity" and is interesting reading for anyone who is involved in sports: http://www.gospelcom.net/ivpress/title/exc/1454-2d.php.

Movies, Culture and Spirituality

With Mel Gibson's "The Passion," the concluding chapters of "The Matrix" and "The Lord of the Rings," and other movies with spiritual over – and under – tones due to come out this fall and winter, the movie theater is going to be a great place to talk with friends and family about things that count for eternity. A great place to learn about those movies from a thought-provoking Christian perspective is www.HollywoodJesus.com. Another website worth checking out is www.damaris.org/ by Damaris International, a Britian-based organization that relates Christianity not only to films but to music and other forms of culture as well. It even offers small group Bible studies that relate to those media.
