Fire Update December, 2002
As of the printing of the December Friedensbote…
Settlement has been reached with Church Mutual regarding damages and renovation. The process was made easier and more favorable for the church because of the detailed scope of work developed by our contractor, Kelmann Corporation, and the attitude and cooperation of Church Mutual and their estimators. The Church Council feels fortunate that hiring an expensive independent adjuster became unnecessary due to the integrity of both the insurance company and contractor throughout the process of determining losses.
At a Congregational Meeting in late October the renovation plan was approved nearly unanimously. It calls for the renovated sanctuary to retain its traditional style and warmth though turning it around to create a new chancel area at the east end of the building. The choir and organ loft at the west end will become “stadium seating.” The stained glass windows will all be restored to their original designs. Audio and visual components will be enhanced. A new organ and piano will be the instrumental foundation for praise and worship. Arches and wood accents will give us a visual sense of carry over from the old sanctuary. The altar will be incorporated into the renovation. The original oil painting of the ascension of Christ (that was once part of the pre-1933 altar which was later displayed on the east wall by the balcony) has been restored and will be incorporated into the renovation.
It’s going to be Easter before the sanctuary is completed. The other parts of the building (not yet usable) should be done by Christmas. Every Sunday, in the worship bulletin, a detailed update of progress is printed…check it out.
Your prayers and support are still needed. This challenge is being addressed by many volunteers from church and the church staff. By the time it is completed, thousands of hours will have been spent by volunteers in meetings and serving in other capacities. Though the insurance money will cover all the loss and a great deal of the enhanced renovation, donations to the Fire Fund are welcomed and appreciated. Those donations will help us make the renovation even better and will free up other church money for other needs.
